Resolving subwavelength objects with a crossed wire mesh superlens operated in backscattering mode

چکیده
In this work, we demonstrate that a crossed-wires superlens operated in backscattering mode can resolve targets separated by a subwavelength distance. It is theoretically shown that the effect of the backscattered field on the return loss of a probe antenna is sufficiently strong to allow us to discriminate the targets over a broad range of frequencies. These properties have been experimentally confirmed at microwave frequencies. 4 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Canalization of subwavelength images by electromagnetic crystals
The original regime of operation for flat superlenses formed by electromagnetic crystals is proposed. This regime does not involve negative refraction and amplification of evanescent waves in contrast to the perfect lenses formed by left-handed media. The subwavelength spatial spectrum of a source is canalized by the eigenmodes of the crystal having the same longitudinal components of wave vect...
متن کاملMultiscale analysis of subwavelength imaging with metal-dielectric multilayers.
Imaging with a layered superlens is a spatial filtering operation characterized by the point spread function (PSF). We show that in the same optical system the image of a narrow subwavelength Gaussian incident field may be surprisingly dissimilar to the PSF, and the width of the PSF is not a straightforward measure of the resolution. The FWHM or standard deviation of the PSF gives ambiguous inf...
متن کاملExperimental studies of far-field superlens for sub-diffractional optical imaging.
Contrary to the conventional near-field superlensing, subwavelength superlens imaging is experimentally demonstrated in the far-field. The key element is termed as a Far-field SuperLens (FSL) which consists of a conventional superlens and a nanoscale coupler. The evanescent fields from the object are enhanced and then converted into propagating fields by the FSL. By only measuring the propagati...
متن کاملSubwavelength imaging by a left-handed material superlens.
In this work, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to justify the superlensing effect of left-handed material (LHM) slabs. Our results demonstrate that subwavelength resolution can be achieved by LHM slabs with certain parameters. We present the dynamic feature of the imaging process and the dependence of physical parameters on the performance of the superlens. These result...
متن کاملSub-diffraction-limited optical imaging with a silver superlens.
Recent theory has predicted a superlens that is capable of producing sub-diffraction-limited images. This superlens would allow the recovery of evanescent waves in an image via the excitation of surface plasmons. Using silver as a natural optical superlens, we demonstrated sub-diffraction-limited imaging with 60-nanometer half-pitch resolution, or one-sixth of the illumination wavelength. By pr...
